When one looks at an image, one’s eyes are constantly moving from one part to another. From the figure to the background. From one perception to the next. And back and forth and back again. Those leaps are fast and happen unconsciously or subconsciously. It's like breathing. We can control our breath and influence the rhythm. We can even decide to stop breathing for a while. But the moment we shift our attention from this conscious act the body takes over without any sign of interruption. In this regard looking is like breathing.
