Material Legacy draws attention to the actual capacities and potentials behind material lifetimes. As the true cost of our consumption lies in tomorrow, today’s misuse and mismanagement leads to an exhausted and polluted planet in 2030.
Set in 2030, Material Legacy is a speculative project, in which researchers cooperate with a deep learning algorithm to make the full lifecycle of products visible to consumers via augmented animations.A positive impact on our collective decisions is inspired through the immediate experience of long-term material intelligence. The visual information layer added to objects generates a desirable sustainable aesthetic, enabling people to encounter the true legacy of particular materials, promoting new ways of sustainable living.

Petra Ritzer is an experience designer working in the encounters of digital and physical space, and is driven by a critical and systematic design approach, which explores the layering of both realms. This juxtaposition provokes novel concepts on material and technology consciousness.
Her final project provides a new understanding of matter through an interactive installation that identifies objects and utilises an AI database to project the full lifespan of materials onto the objects. This immersive experience provokes new ideas on an optimistic clean future through a reimagined relationship of users, scientists and designers, offering a deeper understanding for the future impacts of our current decisions.
