My research began in the small coastal town of Whitby in Yorkshire. I was interested in the craft tradition of Whitby Jet jewellers who began carving and polishing the local organic gemstone at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Whitby Jet is essentially the fossilised wood of the Monkey Puzzle tree and can been found on the beaches along the Jurassic coastline of East Yorkshire. While at the height of Whitby Jet jewellery production throughout the Victorian era, today's jewellers rely on foragers who scour the beaches following a storm hoping to find small fragments of jet which have been exposed and tumbled from the cliff face.
