Barbican Public Square
The City: A series of outdoor rooms
Â
High-density urban areas are
complicated organisations in which vast complex superblocks are built. These blocks
interrupt continuous flow within the city while disassociating the complex from
the outside urban fabric and community. Within these superblocks, provision for
communal space are kept to the bare minimum, while spaces between buildings are
deserted from habitable gathering places.
Â
Considering human scale and
perception in spatial design is essential at an urban scale, how could spatial
design assist people physically and intuitively in the navigation and
inhabitation of the city?
Â
The Barbican, London, provides a case
study for this exploration by investigating the relationship between the
existing urban context and its blocks. Public squares and spatial interventions
are introduced to provide new access routes and public programmes. These aid navigation
and encourage activity and public gathering.
