Kaperlaq - the time of total darkness.
I strive to work conceptually with a narrative approach to developing textiles, inspired by the legacy of native cultures.
By creating performance costumes I aim to enhance the properties of my textiles through bodily movements, experimenting with how they can be visualised through media such as film and photography.
For 'Kaperlaq- the time of total darkness' I have drawn inspiration from Inuit mythology, exploring how spiritualism has been closely connected to material objects; in particular in the form of occult artifacts such as evil 'Tupilaqs' and protective Amulets.
Based on the traditional material elements that these objects were made from, I have developed a curiosity archive of textiles as well as a performance video that evokes the spiritual narrative aspects of my costumes though movements, lighting and music.
