Title of Dissertation: The Re-Materialisation of the Net Art Object

This thesis aims to discuss the attempts so far by curators and galleries to assimilate net art into the white cube. Taking as its point of departure the marginalisation of net art from mainstream contemporary art as a whole, the text compares web-based practices to other artist-led networks of production, citing Fluxus and the Mail art network of the 1960s and 1970s as its two central case studies. With the exclusively retrospective mainstream popularity of these two moments of modern art as support, the notion is posited that net art is so inherently oppositional to the physical exhibition that perhaps attempts to amalgamate the worlds of the virtual and the real are futile, unless tackled in hindsight. I wish, most of all, in this text, to decide for myself whether the inclusion of net art in mainstream contemporary exhibitionary practices is a worthwhile or necessary pursuit, or if in fact net art should remain online.
