The Magnificent Seven: Nunhead Photography type design

The Magnificent Seven. From gravestone lettering to digital fonts.

The Magnificent Seven is a family of seven typefaces in various stages of completion. The name and starting point of the work derives from London's Magnificent Seven – the seven large cemeteries around London constructed between 1833 and 1841.

As a graphic designer with a fondness for craft and small details, I have devoted my second year at the RCA to creating this family of typefaces. Type design is the epitome of slow, time consuming labour: not unlike the way cemeteries embody time.
