'DesigNA' is an interactive platform where DNA forms the basis of design. How will design unleash the potential offered by Synthetic Biology? 'DesigNA' invites you to create the innovative designs of the future by bringing together the highly specialised worlds of Design and Synthetic Biology.
The design process involved a collaboration between myself, the designer, and James Field, the synthetic biologist, in order to both explore the subtleties of such a collaboration and the notion of selecting DNA by property, repurposing cells to produce new materials, and using them as the core of Industrial Design outcomes. My process is translated to create the 'DesigNA' platform. James Field holds a PhD from Imperial College London and is co-founder of LabGenius, a software used by scientists to combine different DNA sequences to create new outcomes.
Through 'DesigNA', scientists and designers may work together leveraging each other’s specialisms to create new materials and products with properties beyond nature, and beyond the capability of any man-made polymer.
