Mia Dudek's practice touches upon the encounter of the body within the European tradition, in an understated political and ideological context. The work focuses on the urbanisation, overpopulation and therefore, alienation of an individual. Through concentrated moments of assimilating herself to the surroundings, Mia Dudek is interested in Kafka's idea of home specifically designed prison for everyday existence as well as Lynchian machinery of living or threat.Â
For artist focusing on the search, self-awareness of own corporeality and metaphysical fear of imprisonment both the urban as well as the physical, the concrete became a metaphor for the corporeality. On one hand similar to skin in its surface and on the other hand restraint. As much as the skin that simultaneously divides us from and connects us to outside world, concrete has transformed into a material for graphic recording of the surface of the body and its physical states.Â
The unification of the urban fabric and flesh appears as in Ovidian metaphor of metamorphosis – the human body mutates into a concrete block and is enchanted in it.Â
Other elements such as metal fence also symbolise restriction and limitation; silicon alludes to carnality, physiology, body fluids as well artificial body gadgets; holes suggest mother and child, glory holes, the barrier that still allows to feel someone/something else from the other side.
Mia Dudek's works have one mutual and strong concern – brutality, violence and power of the architecture; representing hermetic exteriors and their horizons endlessly bounded.
Restrictive environments are inescapable but also contain otherwise formless and fluid bodies that threaten to spill over the borders of inanimate structures.
