Digital media foster a growing information overload that makes it increasingly difficult to select and to reflect on information. This research defines virtual typography as visual data that appears virtually, ie almost typographical.

It discusses the perception of gradually emerging text information, which, in the context of digital media, may be considered as anti-efficient. The thesis describes how virtual typography can be deployed to counteract the ongoing acceleration of the written word in digital environments. It argues that aesthetic perception can be seen as a para-communicative function which can help seduce viewers to attribute more of their time to contemplate digitally transmitted text information.
