ADS1: Elephant & Castle
PARASITIC HOMOSTASI(A)S: A disastrous social housing experiment, the Aylesbury Estate fundamentally failed and consequently is up for demolition. Elephant and Castle was historically, and continues today to house, one of the highest concentrations of African immigrants in the UK.
PARASITIC HOMOSTASI(A)S ultimately challenges the perception and planning of social housing, and looks at a responsive scenario in which communities grow from their cultural heritage and are not alienated into rationalised static compartments. This architecture draws inspiration from African ritual medicine and horticulture to create a micro-environment capable of re-transforming Elephant and Castle into a sustainable responsive and multilayered environment.
