Erotic Matter

Erotic Matter is a textile research project exploring surfaces that impact the sensual interior experience. This is achieved through investigating the preciousness and fragility of gold in its different states. Considering the subtle line between controlled and uncontrolled, blurred and defined, with the use of stitches to draw the narrative. The contrasts in materials and the glimpses of light are meant to arouse the mind, pushing the gold leaf materiality to its limits. Metals and embroidery are explored, combined, and captured with polaroids. The project is a translation of the erotic and sexology theories in written language into a material vocabulary that can appeal to the mind using different techniques. The eroticism of the material is anchored to the idea that any experience will perish, so the fragility of the materials is admired.

  • Marika Grasso is a textile designer, and her practice investigates between the haptic and the mind perception of materials. With the use of a Polaroid camera, digital embroidery and gold, she looks into the intangible elements of eroticism to create a tactile vocabulary.

Her research is inspired by Georges Bataille, erotic literature, neuroscience, and human behavior studies.
