Surface Cast

Surface Cast is a dynamic casting system for architectural facade panels. Through the use of a flexible fabric mould and adjustable control splines the system is capable of generating a wide range of double curved surfaces.

The starting point for this project was the observation that today’s design tools have, in many cases, outgrown mainstream manufacturing technology. Digital CAD tools enable designers, architects and artists to design ever more complex geometries, often times pushing the boundaries of what is economically and ecologically sustainable to manufacture.

In response a parameter driven process, which allows complexity to emerge from material behaviour, was developed

  • With a background in in additive manufacturing and robotics, Paco is interested in how material things around us are made. His passion for experimentation has led him to conduct projects ranging from experimental process design to material research. With a focus on physical making he allows technology and design to evolve through careful observation, failure and serendipity.
