A Modern Reflection on Stillness

One project in the show is a book called 'Knot Four Use' inspired by the job I do as a part time English tutor. 60% of the English Language is silent how do you teach these instances of silence without just explaining it with 'that's english' can I not give more reasoning behind them? It has explored the notion of silent letters in relation to children and new learners of the language. The book consists of activities along side anecdotes and stories of the history of certain letters and words to help the read to engage with the subject and remember.

The other piece in the show is called 'wondering when it would end or fighting the nagging nerve' . Much of our life is spent in distraction. Living in one place responding to someone or something in another place. It's difficult to stay for some moments in quiet. This piece is a multi source story that feeds the users tendencies to long for distraction. The story begins in a book but on some pages there are links, the reader needs to follow these links on the iPad provided to get certain parts of the story. Sometimes they are asked to do other things. Finally there is a postcard provided with the last page to the story.

  • My practice revolves around my interest in 'the other'. Who the other is, what he or she feels and thinks. My practice investigates the other through interactions as a point of research; forming an understanding of them and therefore allowing new ideas and experiments to be produced. Reacting to the reactions of the audience. I am interested in research, book making, editing and publishing and throughly enjoy creating publications and experimenting with the different ways a book can be used. Can it be an interactive experience? I am intrigued by technology and its effect on our relationship with books. I aim to produce work that allows the familiar concept of the book to be pushed further, that it can become an extension of itself. Meaning: the book exists in its original form but is curated in such a way that it becomes an interaction or performance, something more. How does publishing exist within a performative process? I am really interested in making work that questions the reader and provokes them to take part or react, meaning that the work is not yet complete until the audience has interacted with it.
