Lina Patsiou

MA work

I am interested in the stories objects can reveal about the moment of their conception, the situations which they have witnessed or the special meaning they hold for the particular individual. My work explores the ways in which a narrative may inform the design process and influence the tangible characteristics of the outcome object.

Chromatography is a system developed to translate each letter of the alphabet to a specific colour. Through a series of overlapping decodings and encodings, the method provides a way for abstracting the alphabet to a twenty-six colour pallette and through this, language to colour combinations. The method is applied on an interactive device that employs this system to spray colour messages on the surface of objects as well as an interactive 3D modelling software which allows the user to 'spell out' objects. The 'Chromatography Series' takes an object's invested meaning as the starting point of the design process.

'Forever' is a collection that explores the ways in which furniture can narrate stories about the situations and environments within which they have existed and the ways they have been used. Pieces upholstered in leather are exposed to light. The tan-lines created are the object’s ephemeral decoration as well as a direct representation of its place and arrangement at the moment of the exposure.
