Rouffach, Leonora Hamill

Rouffach is a multi-channel video installation commissioned by the Centre Hospitalier de Rouffach, a psychiatric hospital in Alsace.

This commission allowed me to investigate the encounter with the other mediated through the camera.

In my practice I explore the dimensions of empathy — a drive to respond with an appropriate emotion to another person’s thoughts and feelings.

Empathy: a sense of similarity in feelings experienced by the self and the other, without confusion between the two.
I am fascinated by the expression of inner states, how they are conveyed visually and how the spectator reacts to these representations.
In my practice I analyse the face, the body and the beholder as ciphers for emotion. I concentrate on the self, the other and what brings them together yet inevitably separates them - empathy.
