By Default Audio Visual Project by Laura Silke & Lotte Rose

'By Default' is an audio-visual collaboration between graphic designer Laura Silke and sound artist Lotte Rose. The collaboration started from a common interest in interdisciplinarity and sound, experienced through the context of visual culture. Based on theories of narratives in Image, Sound and Text by the French philosopher Roland Barthes (Image, Music, Text – 1978), 'By Default' is an entirely digitally produced collaboration. The overall process of the project follows a loop analysis motion between sound artist and designer. We strongly believe that creating the framework for a project in this way enables a focus on specific professional competencies and skills. The final text creates an abstract image of the narrative process that was generated in the form of our analysis of each other's works. Nothing has been physically manufactured or processed in these works, an approach which embodies how we design sound and image today. To demonstrate our fascination with the digital world, we have decided to put it in the context of our cultural heritage. We specify the digital and manufacture our process in a solid form. The final piece is published as a large-scale modern version of a tapestry. We love the concept of tying together the traditional, with the more conceptual and contemporary approach to craftsmanship. We were very attracted to old tapestries that tell the tales of historical wars and everyday
