On Not Understanding: a Study of Imaginary Taxonomies

This project seeks to explore the potentiality generated from the encounter between rigid logical structures and unrestrained, illogical contents. In light of this purpose, it looks at a category of objects that, in the artistic and literary fields, treat the asystematic systematically, and somehow manage to transcend the common ways of seeing and thinking.

The analysis of surreal encyclopaedias, alongside the history of real ones, becomes a metaphor of the condition of not understanding and a speculation on the inability to accept what cannot be interpreted according to usual and prevailing systems. Through a process of abstraction, the limits of thought become limits of language and the discourse reaches the contemporary, raising questions about transparency and opacity in the current debate on communication and integration.
