Athens is a Ruin

Athens is simultaneously the crucible of Western culture and symbol of European failure.  This project asks how the problematic relationship between Greece and Western Europe might be re-assessed through the reinstatement of the Parthenon as a bank.  The bank is funded through a long-term loan of the Parthenon to the British Museum, where it is displayed at its correct elevation on the Bloomsbury Acropolis.

Meanwhile, an ambitious series of earth movements in and around the Acropolis create a pair of spaces that together form a new bank for Athens.  In the first, original artefacts are stored, while in the second, copies of those artefacts are displayed publicly.  The value created through this strategic copying and exhibition is used to finance emerging economic experiments in Athens.
