No Space Like Home
A film about an old woman in 1960s Moscow seeking solace from the loneliness of old age in dreams of space travel.
The film is shot on a multi-plane using cut-out puppets and backgrounds reminiscent of the visual style of soviet animator, Yuri Norstein. Backgrounds and characters are rendered in layers of watercolour and ink to lend the film richness and depth.

Since early childhood I have documented the world around me in my sketchbooks. Studying languages gave me access to the rich tableaux of contemporary life in Moscow and Naples. My sketch pad became like a travel log.
My childhood was spent in Moscow, the folklore and grisly tales of the cannibalistic witch, Baba Yaga, that haunted me as a child continue to influence my work. I grew up with Soviet cartoons, Nu Pogodi, the Russian answer to Tom and Jerry with a chain-smoking wolf and a rabbit, and Vini Pukh –a gruffer, craftier version of A. A. Milne's character. The playfulness and innovation of Soviet animators and filmmaker such as Yuri Norstein and Andrei Tarkovsky inspired a profound love of filmmaking and continues to influence my work today.
