Nature as Muse: Biomimicry & Architecture for sustainable urban environment / MARGATE PLAYSCAPE

The project reprograms Margate’s historic stone pier as a cultural park through an extension of the existing pier’s promenade and space. The park encompasses four themes: Socialising, Activity, Performance and building community. It also develops a strong sense of pride and ownership for local people as their public and community space. The programme provides dynamic activities to engage people. It provides a seamless network of services, workshop space, socializing space, cafeteria and beautiful outdoor spaces as a skatepark including event facilities for various performances and festivals.

The concept of ‘the fluidity of movement’ informs the design strategy to create architectural and interior spaces for spontaneous events to occur.

The space provides possibilities to produce unique experiences and memories through the interplays between an environment and physical movement from body and space. It is a highly innovative space with undulating a series of ramps to connect between spaces and path. The part of ramps and surface of ground produce unique movements by different tidal levels during the day. It creates different atmospheres, situations and experiences to users in the space. The form of this architectural element creates the view of the new landscape beyond producing a sense of intrigue and heightening the expectations of passers-by.

The unrestricted journey by a definitive path can be undertaken by water (tidal), and it transforms into a landscape of geometries, a reaction to site lines between follies and openings in the pier wall.

The follies enable personal interaction with the adjacent Skate Park and offers views of the site from a unique vantage point.

The concrete, wooden and glass structures associate with shape of wave. It is highly experimental structure and the whole space is a great organic variation. This project aims to be as near to human movement as possible. People move in curves organically in the space. The interior is thus dematerialised by the absence of walls and dividers, encouraging the constant exchange of values and conversations. The experience in the park is for its new value and function as a community generator and communication.
