The First Day

2018

The First Day is an installation of two sculptures which show the Sun and water in a future digital environment as abstract forms. ‘The Sun’, structured in slim aluminium stands with blue light, tracks the movement of natural sun. The Water, beside it, is a thin metal sheet which moves like the surface of the ocean. In Genesis 1:1-6, these two elements were the first things in the world God created on the first day. Inspired by The Last Question by Isaac Asimov, the work uses two opposite accounts, science and religion, to create a fictional world of digital nature. The work imagines that the digital environment will become analogue to human nature so there will be another ‘first day’ with a creation of the sun and the water, the most non-digital elements.
