Automated Craft, Julian Bond
The craft worker is a flexible machine, able to make subtle changes and adjustments. In automated production, mechanisation has reduced tasks to simple actions where workers carry out repetitive tasks in which there is no need for variation. The automated craft machine gives unskilled makers guidance, allowing them to handcraft artefacts that aim for the aesthetic and finished quality of mass-produced ceramic goods. In this role between craft and automation, the machine and user become dependent on each other.
