Can architecture be neutral in a conflict zone?
South Korea has been in dispute over territory with North Korea for over 60 years. Everyday the military from both countries take part in intensive training over the disputed maritime demarcation line. Daily they prepare to go to war. In this area of extreme dispute, I wonder what role could architecture play.
Three times a month large-scale military exercises fire over 1,000 missiles into the sea. This has lead to severe issues on site. Local people and marine life are getting harmed because of this conflict, causing an imbalance in the natural environment. In other words, the conflict creates a wider conflict.
In response to this situation I will create a neutral area, made up of delicate and fragile islands. These will be used by the fishermen for the public use and will also double up as artificial reefs for marine life. By using materials that can be easily damaged, the islands can represent the vulnerability of the region and remind the two governments of the harm their weapon drills cause.

I am really interested in the impact of the expansion of public space and human behaviours on spaces. My architectural interpretations are partly derived from accumulated historical and spatial understanding, as well as programmes that direct attention to users and the vestiges of life, because houses, stores and museums are clearly targeted at their users. In addition, I think all the processes of architecture centre on people who have different experiences gathering together at one place and communicating with one another.
