Bread is life
“We are soft bodies and we are eating them too” (2017) is a collaboration of Jolien van Schagen & Sinead O’Dwyer, where they explore their relationship to their bodies through food, object & performance in a series of experiments recorded on film.
The process of creation – the physical liberation & personal transformation through movement and exchange – is more important than the eventual end and its possible consequences.
The experiments are a response to van Schagen’s earlier series of dinner happenings “All That Goes It All Becomes”, that merges the elements of food, crafted objects and guests into a moving still-life. It consists of a large table in which to intertwine people, objects, substances & materials. The happenings are a gathering and a space to connect & exchange personally and collectively.
“Crumple, drape, erase” (2017) is part of a series of body casts where I map the physical as well as my physical perception of the body as felt from within, as a means of affirmation and an attempt to understand it.

My work is the result of a studio based practice in which I attempt to reconcile the interplay between three key elements: the subjective self, the physical body & the material process. I’m intrigued by the different roles, characters and personas of the self. Being the subject & object, maker & material of my work, there is a continuous exchange.
I’m interested in the interaction of the domestic, everyday & the surreal. The deformed, flesh, sensuality, excess, remains and transitoriness, are recurring elements.
The physical act and language of cooking and making are important feeders in my work. I work across various mediums – including (life) casting, weaving, cooking & film – producing happenings, installation, sculpture, objects & domestic textiles.
