Hypoxia
Newton’s film Hypoxia recalls a series of memories derived from the countryside location in which he grew up. Seemingly natural imagery becomes interrupted by an incongruous military presence, fragments of foreign culture seeping into the rural scene.
Two bronze patinated sculptures are also presented alongside, displayed with a system of hanging LED panels that reference the existing fittings of the college building. The sculptures are formed from two flower-arranging blocks, objects traditionally used at celebratory/funerary occasions. In Newton’s works, the flowers have been removed and the usually unseen object is invested into metal with only the traces of its function remaining.

Newton carefully rearranges personal narratives, retelling selected histories in a variety of forms. Through this process, he offers a double take of familiar objects and systems that have become obscured in the routine of the everyday. By highlighting these often-fleeting encounters, he draws awareness to the responsibility of the historical document, negotiating the dilemmas of documenting a moment through a secondary language or artwork.
Born in Swindon, UK, 1988, Newton currently lives and works in London.
