A Series Of Failures

Joao's project, called "A Series Of Failures" explores failing as a method of research, taking advantage of what goes wrong with his processes of manufacturing. Focusing on the inherently political voice design has, "A Series Of Failures" reflects upon contemporary crafts as an opposition to fast fashion and industrialised production. Textiles are worked as collages, through different manipulations. The body is used as a template, being gender neutral. This project documents a process of unbecoming, moving from a fashion design practice to a studio-based practice that responds to multiple areas from arts, fashion or other areas where crafts are used as a means of manufacturing.

  • Focusing on the inherently political voice design has, João’s work explores contemporary crafts as an opposition to fast fashion and industrialized production. Through multiple crafts but mainly towards knitting, João defines his work as a studio- based practice that responds to different fields such as fashion, interiors, and fine arts. Finding creative solutions to problems such as waste management and over-consumption of goods, João is developing his practice mixing found materials with bespoke textiles. His work uses classic menswear influences such as Fair Isle patterns or traditional suiting and turns these references into genderless pieces through deconstruction.
