Billingsgate
‘Billingsgate’ is the name given to a collection of
knitted scarves inspired by visits to London’s Billingsgate
fish market. Photographs of the market environment have continued to provide the stimulus for the
development of textiles; images of fish fins, tails, patina and colours of skin create
mysterious collages. These images have prompted an experimental approach to machine knitting; one in which screen printing processes enhance the knitted surface. Translucency against opacity and natural paired with supernatural colour are two juxtapositions explored in this project. A loyalty and fascination with the research photography is evident in the final collection of fabrics, which capture the vibrancy and honesty of Billingsgate fish market.
