BIHOME

Bihome is a series of objects which allow users to grow and process their own products at home from biomaterials. The objects promote growth by utilising household waste as nutrition/substrates.

The bacterial cellulose growth beds stack together to allow users to harness sugars from food waste as nutrition for the bacteria, acetobacter xylinum. Cellulose forms on top of the liquid through a regenerative process, creating a leather-like finished material.

The mycelium incubator is a contained system, which propagates the growth of mycelium. Mycelium is the fast growing hyphae root system of mushrooms, which creates a plastic/foam like material. It can be mixed with waste produce, such as coffee grounds, and grown into forms.

By creating bio-based alternatives to harmful materials such as plastic, we can enter into a new bio era where we grow what we consume, making us symbiotic with our environment and reducing our negative impact.

  • Jessica is a bio-designer who focuses mainly on materiality in order to help consumers become more environmentally conscious. Her research looks at how we can coincide with organisms and work with them to create products, thus replacing harmful production and disposal methods. She is also interested in how eco-systems work and how design can help boost their prosperity.
