Jess Edwards
MA work
MA work
As part of her MA programme Jess Edwards spent three months in Kyoto, Japan studying the Japanese tea ceremony and traditional resist dyeing techniques. Upon returning to the RCA in January 2013, Jess combined her newly learnt skills with her knowledge of screenprinting and hand painting.
Inspired by the ancient rituals, graceful gestures and unspoken laws of the tea ceremony Jess has dyed, printed and painted her fabrics. An uplifting colour palette has been selected from the unusually bright Shokin-tei tea room that Jess studied at Katsura Imperial Villa, Kyoto.
The finished fabrics are held taught in red cedar frames to form a series of small architectural spaces. These miniature spaces are large enough for just one person to occupy and they offer us a moment to escape the busy environments we find ourselves in; just as the ancient tea rooms provide in Japan.
Jess will continue to develop her miniature architecture series for fine art gallery environments as well as searching for more commercial applications for these escapist spaces. She is happy to undertake commissions and also works as a freelance textile designer.
