Research Project: No Sweat? Removing Perspiration Stains From Rayon Clothing

During my three-year course I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of objects ranging from a pair of Egyptian socks, an 18th-century patchwork quilt and a 1960s mini dress.

My practice at the V&A contributes to the museum’s exhibition programme. I have conserved objects for Surreal Things: Surrealism and Design, and The Golden Age of Couture. As part of my studies I completed a summer internship at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, Canada, where I had the chance to work on ethnographic objects.

Textile conservators are increasingly faced with treating and preserving modern materials, such as viscose rayon. The aim of my research project was to expand on existing knowledge about the removal of perspiration stains by adapting prior methodologies used for cellulosic and protein fibres.
