Often varied in output, James Jessiman's work attempts to display and mesh together a number of references. Using an archive of collected printed matter, he strips away context and language to focus on themes of the future and ask where our world might be going.
An important beginning to the work, whether sculpture or collage, is drawing. His drawings represent fictive spaces that lie between the gallery and the domestic, as well as workings out for sculptural works. Recent sculptures continue the theme of the domestic, occupying the space between furniture and the art object. Works appear to offer some purpose to the viewer, though the function of each is not altogether clear.
Hopes and intentions from movements in contemporary culture, Modernist architecture, early European rave movements, Science Fiction, and a personal collection of spiritual and religious leaflets all inform his practice. Each have their own positive vision for the future and shared optimism to build towards a New World. If each sets their sight on a new world, where does this new world go upon every movements failure?
