Learning as a Form of Living; Spatial Relations defined by Social Rituals
In institutions dedicated to digital forms of labour, the domestic is being subsumed as transitory interior design elements to promote so-called ‘socially productive’ spaces. This value placed on connectivity is exerting a recursive effect on institutions of learning that prepare individuals for these new workplaces. The project explores a methodology centered on typological investigation to facilitate the integration of the home with the institution of working and learning, taking the spatial requirements for a central London University Technical Academy as critical context.

Throughout my architectural career so far, my passion for making, history and writing matured into interests in model-making, its overlap between the physical and the computer, and the potential for research, particularly typological research, to shape my approach to architectural design. An emphasis on technical studies with an urban pathway at Westminster University coupled with a real-life Maori construction project while studying at Unitec in Auckland, as well as working on site at the Shard in my year-out, provided a motivation to research the application of new materials and construction innovation, in particular for urban housing typologies. At the RCA, I developed my interest in exploring architecture in terms of its new broader social obligations in being aware of archetypes from different parts of the world and, crucially, the role typologies of architecture can play in the context of rapid environmental and social change.
