Black Out

People passing us by on a busy street might give us a grave feeling. Although they are alive and they walk, they do not interact with others and are busy passing them by while finding each other uncomfortable. When a pile of these people builds up, the burden increases and dark feelings become deeper. Even if we do not recall the look or characteristics of strangers, as people accumulate, the density becomes greater, the anxiety increases and the accumulation becomes closer to black.

  • Fast paced life, which is a major characteristic of contemporary society, has some negative aspects. Art can highlight negative aspects of the world to show people a better way to live.

My practice develops around themes related to negative aspects of fast-paced society. As such, fast lifestyle brings efficiency in terms of development, it is widely accepted by the modern generation. However, I am concerned about the negative impacts of such fast-growing societies and their fast-paced lifestyles, especially with respect to how people constantly move forward without looking back and how we have become insensitive to our past. My art invites the audience to reflect on the way they live and challenges them to reflect on whether this is inevitably the sole solution to life.

I work extensively with prints. By taking advantage of how unique printmaking processes allow me to work with layers, I create artworks which divide the world into layers based on respective topics. The accumulative effort that results from the printmaking processes echoes with the time element in many of my artworks. I continuously experiment with the possibilities of layering, including overlapping, extinction and placement as ways of expression in my practice.

Therefore, I look at things which are missed or abandoned by people in the midst of a fast-paced lifestyle, using the possibilities of layering to make people think about the need for a relaxed life.
