Over the barricade

From traditional oriental painting delicately painted on silk to taxidermy made by animal carcass, eclectic culture from the past and the contemporary, the east and the west, and painting and installation is physical characteristics of my works. Through the artistic practice with various cultural references, I question to myself in a continuous manner.

I define myself as a storyteller. Images of fragmented and scattered narratives spread across the world I created are tangled and mixed together. Each story is working as an independent entity, but shares a common world full of imagination, making another narrative. With the exquisite dialectical allegory, each story has its own voice and makes crash noise, dismantling central hierarchy system. A variety of industrial products are spread across the whole world where hybrid animals with physical trait of humankind inhabit and boundary between the world of myth and that of contemporary becomes diluted. This is how I recognize our contemporary world.

While I have lived in the most peaceful world from the view point of archaeology since humankind appeared, I try to stare at barbaric times hidden behind the material affluence of contemporary society. In fact, the insight is not achieved by a complex philosophical, religious discussion or even by scientific research, but by artistic language that realizes mysterious illusion accumulated inside of me through private experience and public history. I believe the illusion from language of arts has the ability to offer a real experience distinguishable from information.

From the fundamental inquiry in terms of humanity to the tradition of oppressed, the independent narratives generated from involuntary mechanism start to conceive political nature inherent inside of me as an historical evidence, and dilute their boundaries in a painting, creating active movement in an incessant manner. Therefore, I consider my work as a form of political movement comprised of beautiful fantasies, which will make our world affluence and attractive.
