Heidi Smith

Mischievously confronting the audience with a strange inbred subculture that has been digested and then regurgitated. The work takes many forms through writing, painting, performance, film and photography.

Heidi draws upon her own experiences of growing up in the working class town of Portsmouth and the collision of being an artist in London; the complexities of status and identifying oneself in taste, gender, culture and class.

Heidi's wild aspirational scenarios, often modelled and performed by either herself or her sisters, are used as a protagonist to expose the reality of the situation. The works hover in the space between the high production of the glossy pop culture and consumption, and the aspirational attempts of the girl in her bedroom who invests in it.
