Versatile Strip - A new experience of relaxation through materiality

My aim is to create indirect illumination with Versatile Strip in order to explore interior spaces, introducing new comfortable and relaxed environments. There are two outcomes for this project: one is a lampshade for interior space, the other is an architectural instillation.

The lampshade can be installed in welcoming places such as hotels, office receptions or in domestic settings. Irregular hand-cut strips of styrene plastic are precisely constructed with overlaying into a curved kidney shape to create a three-dimensional form, balancing imperfection with precision.  A combination of flexible plastic strips and papery see-through cotton organdie creates light diffusing effects and facilitates the three-dimensional form. The organic form and soft lighting of the Versatile Strip visually softens the angular structures of indoors spaces. The choice of materials and development of the forms are the result of explorative processes and experimental research.

The Versatile strip can be transformed into diverse three-dimensional forms through user interaction. The flat piece can be manipulated and fixed using a simple changeable fixture. The idea of transformation came from the inspiration of the Mobius strip, and the idea of infinity within a structure.

The second outcome, an architectural installation uses the same concepts and experimental research, but applies these principles on a larger scale.  I propose a large-scale sculptural piece filling indoor spaces with soft curves countering the rigidity of traditional architecture.

  • I'm fascinated by wellness design. Aiming to help people to have positive feeling through materiality. Based on the goal, exploring colour, material and form experiments and imagining to facilitate the finished materials into space context.
