Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that has no known cure and is the most common cause of disability in the UK. The articular cartilage in the affected joint becomes worn. Keeping active is an important part of managing the disease and associated pain, as strengthening muscles can help stabilise the affected joint and absorb shock.

Stairs in the home are often perceived as an obstacle rather than an opportunity to exercise. This project aims to assist people with knee osteoarthritis to conserve their independence and quality of life by helping them to tackle stairs and keep their joints active.
