Palace in Loci

Enter The Palace in Loci to liquid rooms and gaping windows that emit the sound of the crashing ocean. Within its silent halls footsteps are absorbed, as if the floorboards were made from sand. Corridors succeed endless corridors, and bodies of water hang dislocated within a space forever dissolving into itself. At its centre, stone dreams that will never awaken.

Within The Palace in Loci one is guided through an articulation of space that echoes the temporality of memory. Architecture is made momentarily physical through recollection, but then falls into collapse and ruin, paradoxically to erode and disappear altogether; finally to reemerge whole once again.

    Specialism

    movingimage

  • Through subtle juxtapositions of image, narrative and location, indefinite and unattainable environments are forged. The viewer is always held at a remove and never enters them physically, yet a world beyond the bounds of the frame is implied.

Theatrical props consolidate the fragile and ultimately unanchored qualities of landscapes together with the collapsibility and temporal nature of scenographic backdrops. As one peers into these alternate worlds with distanced fascination, fact and fiction slip and blur; one’s sense of reality is quietly ruptured.

Working across still and moving image, I search for the authentic and for what can be constructed as real through architecture and storytelling, all bound up in the oft unreality of memory. My enquiries often involve collaboration, working with individuals across different territories to physically and conceptually map an internal geography. These conversations form liminal extensions of my interrogation of the politics and psychology of space and structures of suspended disbelief.
