Sensorial Escape
Surrounded by a four-lane highway and hiding behind the concrete walls of the city of Tripoli (north Lebanon) is an oval shaped oasis: The Rashid Karami International Fair – a project by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
Abandoned since the start of the Lebanese civil war in 1975, the 70 hectare site offers an antidote to the frenetically dense and gritty urban core – providing a reflective, introspective space. The design proposal seeks to reactivate these qualities, emphasising its sublime and subterranean characteristics through a repurposing strategy incorporating a saboun (soap factory) and a mixed-gender spa.
Focusing on the two structures – the Lebanese Pavilion and the Experimental Theatre – the proposal reconnects the site with the city whilst retaining its aesthetic identity. Exploring the notions of ritual and cleansing, the proposed journey celebrates the atmospheric qualities of the spaces and at the same time grounds it within its cultural context. Creating a poetic experience that brings people together through their senses, a new form of public gathering where the immaterial aspects of space are key.
