'Sound is intrinsically and unignorably relational: it emanates, propagates, communicates, vibrates and agitates; it leaves a body and enters others; it binds and unhinges, harmonises and traumatises; it sends the body moving, the mind dreaming, the air oscillating. It seemingly eludes definition, while having profound effect.'

  • Brandon LaBelle

My artwork takes a sensory observation of private and public places. The key to enter my work is often an acoustic intervention within an environment. Again and again, sound makes my mind drift. It pushes and pulls my perception backwards and forward between the real, that is in front of me and the state of daydream (drifting). In this meditative state, images and acoustic overlap melt into something else. I collect such perceived material in order to catch the spatial atmosphere of a location, its aura. A symbiosis evolves between reality and abstraction. While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project my methodology is consistent. Subjects such as loss and isolation often are combined into installations that feature sculpture, drawing and print. Since recently, the found sound itself takes part of the overall picture as well. The installation reflects reinventions of the aura perceived before. In this relation, images, sound and material all build the scaffolding of my work.
