OpenSurgery
DIY Surgery Robot
By presenting the hardware for a DIY robot assisted surgery system, theoretically capable of performing keyhole surgery in a domestic setting, I aim to provoke alternative ways of thinking about healthcare and the socioeconomic frameworks it operates within. The project also questions the potential of the current digital-maker movement to adopt more critically engaging societal roles. The OpenSurgery initiative investigates whether building DIY surgical robots, outside the scope of regulated healthcare, could provide a plausible and preferable solution to the pressing problem of limited access to professional health services for growing numbers of people worldwide.
