METASound
Sound pollution is a main health concern that affects more than 40 per cent of the EU's population. In chronic cases noise can cause cardiovascular diseases and ultimately death. This problem is largely underestimated, because as we accustom ourselves to higher sound levels we tend not to associate the physical symptoms with it. However the brain is constantly overloaded, trying to screen unwanted sounds out, and this causes problems.Â
Metasound is an exploration of two innovative systems that deal with machine and environmental noise, respectively. The first is a tool to apply advanced physics research on new acoustic meta-materials to everyday life appliances to achieve 'silence by geometry design'. In the second one, the focus is on a sustainable alternative to non-recyclable polyurethane acoustic foams, based on a combination of shape and material made of fungi with 60 per cent environmental sound absorption.
