The Big House
Demographic change impacts ways of living, social systems, economics, design and how people feel. This proposal asks the question: How can we live together to challenge the issues of demographic change?
Many of us in the UK lead lonely lives. Eight million people live alone now. The seniors are isolated from our community after retirement, young adults feel excluded from the reality despite  strong social networking. We should know who we live beside and gain a sense of well-being from being connected to our neighbours.Â
The Big House is a new collective housing prototype for single people and single-parent families of all ages. The English terraced house is the setting; Mornington Terrace Street in Camden. Â The English terraced house was designed within a period when life was different, then people wanted to be in their own spaces, now, we need to engage with others.
Using the circulation spaces in the traditionally-designed house is part of an international strategy to redefine and improve sharing as well as interaction, the occupants share their advantages, interests and needs whilst naturally crossing over and moving through their house.
Building interactive networks between people has great value, this project appeals to something that we all feel and intuitively understand.
Can this model of living bring progressive shifts to us all?
