Game

Game is an installation comprised of paintings and low relief soft sculpture suspended over a simple theatrical set. Utilising visual tropes tied to America, Texas and the UK – including beauty queens, guns and pit bull dogs – the work describes the traditional narrative of the 'hunt'. Elise's flowing theatrical setting interrogates various socio-political issues specifically situated within domestic environments in the American South; the work touches on sexual, gender and cultural identity as well as mental illnesses that arise from genetic and environmental conditions. The works are painted with gouache and all fabric and textile materials used in the works are locally bought. Separate from the installation, Elise has created free printed hand-outs that feature some of her pencil drawings.

During the Show, Elise's large work Transitional Object, Quilted Wall will be installed on the hoarding around the RCA Battersea construction site.

Elise's degree Show is dedicated to her grandfather James H. Fuller.

  • Elise Broadway – born and raised in Dallas, Texas – is a painter, sculptor and performance artist currently based in London, UK. Elise's work is autobiographical, focusing on mental health issues borne out of both heritable and environmental circumstances, specifically gender and sexual identity experience and developmental conditions within the domestic and public landscape of the American South. The works build on a mixture of Texan cultural iconography, dark humour and deeply personal, introspective imagery as a self-therapeutic mechanism that shifts between catharsis, self-destruction and healing.

Addressing the stigma attached to specific mental health conditions which the artist experiences, the works produce an intimate narrative that seeks to raise awareness of the internal struggle with one’s own identity, the Western concepts of patriotism and loyalty, and the inherent desire to communicate through imagery and artistic means. Elise currently works primarily with drawing, hand-sewn and painted sculptural works, and large-scale fabric instillations.
