Elise Fuller Broadway

Elise Broadway – born and raised in Dallas, Texas – is a painter, sculptor and performance artist currently based in London, UK. Elise's work is autobiographical, focusing on mental health issues borne out of both heritable and environmental circumstances, specifically gender and sexual identity experience and developmental conditions within the domestic and public landscape of the American South. The works build on a mixture of Texan cultural iconography, dark humour and deeply personal, introspective imagery as a self-therapeutic mechanism that shifts between catharsis, self-destruction and healing.

Addressing the stigma attached to specific mental health conditions which the artist experiences, the works produce an intimate narrative that seeks to raise awareness of the internal struggle with one’s own identity, the Western concepts of patriotism and loyalty, and the inherent desire to communicate through imagery and artistic means. Elise currently works primarily with drawing, hand-sewn and painted sculptural works, and large-scale fabric instillations.
