The LITMIS Project

'The LITMIS Project' is a story about the identity of the artist, formed by experiences within diverse groups that the artist used to belong to. In particular, this project is an extension of the artist’s previous work concerning Korean military service, and the symbols from the army or the factors which are derived from deformed specificity of the organisations which are used. Thus, the artist suggests the idol group called LITMIS, which may have similarities with the army or may also be at the antipode of the military service, and dismantles those found factors through the features of the idol industries.

  • My work is based on dismantling and reconstructing the symbols and objects that can be seen in the military, and this process is done by assigning them to my memories or the worldview formed by my military service. In particular, I place ambivalent thoughts, both in curiosity concerning restricted areas and distrust in the cliquish military organisation, both coming from the place-specific peculiarity of the army, being isolated from the outside world. I try to advance my works from the stories of what otherwise could be extremely personal experiences of conscripted men bound together by the Korean Army, leading to the justification for the existence of the Korean Army, then ultimately expanding to the aspect of Korea as it is presently, leading to the possibility of diverse discussion of the matters mentioned above.
