Dehumanisation

More than half of your body is not human.

Human cells only make up to 43%, the rest are microbial. So actually, you are more microbe than human.

In the conflicts between matter and mind, dehumanisation is about speculating the ontology of things. Where do we draw the line between beings and non-beings?

Can only humans occupy awareness or can objects feel and sorrow too?

The research starts off by detaching human cells from my body, taking pieces of myself, growing and merging them with bacterias from objects. In this case stones, something we too often perceive as dead.

What will come alive is a new bacterial culture, a new material, a new being and a new world. And within, mine and yours are no longer necessary.

  • Looking into the history of human centred perception, I am exploring the narratives that surround ‘being’; the borders that are introduced into experiencing as a human, by moving the distinction of beings and non-beings.

By incorporating elements of magic, alternative realities and scientific research, my work aims to de-construct the ideas placed on the world that separate the living and dead properties of objects, life, and the role of human perception in this.
