In House
'In House' is a collection of objects created with domesticated manufacturing techniques. It uses the architecture, objects and materials found within my small home and turns it into an even smaller factory. I have replicated processes such as rotational casting by using the washing machine, brake pressing using the door and steam bending using the microwave, as well as several methods of finishing. The project stems from my interest in production as well as our history of craft and cottage industries, and provides a slightly absurd antithesis to the burgeoning notion that 3D printing can provide everything we ever need.
Folded Furniture
This small collection of folded steel furniture was produced by ‘Specialists in ventilation, ductwork and kitchen canopies,’ S Ward & Co of Limehouse, East London. Utilising the materials and manufacturing processes that the company commonly uses, I designed pieces of outdoor seating that double as storage. In comparison to the most common items they make, my pieces can be produced more quickly and have a higher value. Even if I buy them at a competitive price, our careful honing of the process means we can potentially increase the company’s hourly output value by up to 50 per cent.
