I think animation is all about movement and timing. Working in 2D, there are certain visual ‘rules’ that I find myself working with and against while animating. I shift between flat aesthetics and some illusion of perspective, and try to find potential in the negative spaces of images. I like to manipulate the drawings in my films to such a degree that they become completely abstract moving shapes. I use those abstract elements, characters and the energy of the overall animated movement to tell stories.

But ‘storytelling’, to me, has become a very flexible term. Even with the clearest intention in mind, I find it important to allow for some ambiguity in a film. This helps a piece become more engaging. So, less spoon feeding, more playfulness. When I start working on a new idea, it’s always an act of balancing out eclectic inspirations and processing them afresh.
