Title of Dissertation: Students in Architecture: Architectural Education in Britain 1958-78

'Students in Architecture' examines the architectural education system of Britain between 1958 and 1978. Specifically, it charts the attempt by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to establish a new system of education which placed emphasis on technical and scientific knowledge, practical experience and inter-professional collaboration. A massive programme of construction took place in post-war Britain, and this new system of education was an attempt by the RIBA to place the architectural profession at the centre of the rapidly expanding construction industry. The pedagogy of the RIBA was not welcomed everywhere, however, and 'Students in Architecture' explores the varying types of resistance to this system by schools and students of architecture throughout the period, which not only took the form of student activism typical of the later 1960s, but also featured a quieter, more subtle and longer lasting subversion of the pragmatic ideals supposedly being enforced.

This research relied heavily on the archives of the RIBA in London, as well as many other institutional and university-based archives and also on the architectural press of the period. My other research specialisms include post-war Italian design and the writings of Richard Buckminster Fuller. I have published in Unmaking Things (unmakingthings.rca.ac.uk) and Arc (rcamagazine.co.uk).
